Kinesmetrics Research Laboratory - CSPR Partnership PDF Print E-mail

The Kinesmetrics Research Group [KRG] is directed by Dr. Minsoo Kang at Middle Tennessee State University. Kinesmetrics is a composite word, where “Kines” presents “human movement” and “Metrics” means scale and quantity. The term was first introduced by Dr. Weimo Zhu at University of Illinois. The KRG focuses on the application of measurement, mathematical models, statistical methods, and research methodology in human performance research.

The KRG supports faculty led research projects and provide research opportunities for students in the Department of Health and Human Performance as well as other departments at Middle Tennessee State University. In addition to conducting several funded measurement research projects, the KRG has a unique partnership with Center for Sport Policy and Research to provide measurement and statistical consulting focusing on scale development and validation procedures.

Scale development is fundamental and plays a vital role in conducting meaningful research. Scale development and validation includes the following steps:

  • Develop table of specifications / blueprints
  • Develop items consistent with the objective of the scale and blueprints
  • Review the items (internal & external expert review)
  • Conduct item and instrument analyses
  • Establish psychometric evidence (reliability and validity)
  • Develop guidelines for administration
  • Interpretation of the test scores

The KRG oversees scale development and validation procedures and closely works with investigators from Center for Sport Policy and Research to ensure the scales meet the highest quality standards.
